Eurovision - See You In Sweden

So how did we enjoy the 250th annual 'Let's all vote for the neighbouring country contest?' Not very much I'll bet. I can't tell you how excited I was that this years Songfest was coming from the teeming metropolis that is Baku and boy was every expense spared. It looked like they had cloned the three presenters from all the previous shows and even the snippets between the songs were exactly the same; a schoolboy error from the Azerbaijan Tourist Board there I feel.

Engelbert kicked us off with a song that was so forgettable it seemed to be tailor made to start the show. His performance was OK, but you just knew he was doomed for the wrong side and the wrong end of the score board. I don't think any of us believed the BBC hype that he was massive all across Europe.  But, let's face it, none of the entries were memorable, and that includes the runaway winner from Sweden. Opps, sorry, I should have had a spoiler alert up somewhere.

We all know the UK is never going to win, even if we had the Swedish song we still would have come second from last. Engelbert's total would only have been a success if he was playing Pointless. Also, Graham Norton seems to struggle, he really should be the ideal replacement for Terry Wogan, but then again,Terry had the halcyon years, when the shows  were genuinely daffy and the scoring gloriously erratic. Sadly Graham is saddled with very similar events and very similar scoring year in year our. So he does the best he can with  limited material. Even the half time show was poor this year, gone are the days, and cost, of Riverdance, instead we were lumbered with some Azerbaijan singer who is supposed to be a big star in the UK, I'd never clapped eyes on him before, so perhaps he was in Big Brother or got chucked out early from The X Factor, your guess is as good as mine.

So another year passes and, as usual, we will get the calls for us to pull out. But we all know we will be back next year with another drab old contest, another drab old song and another artist that is, supposedly, big all across Europe, who is doomed for a trip to the bottom of the scoreboard. See you all in Sweden.
