True Blood - Fairies, Witches and Wolves... Oh My!

By the time Dexter reached its forth season we had the Trinity Killer to look forward to and in its forth run The Wire was delving into the problems of the Baltimore education system, so what do we get from True Blood? Fairyland and witches.

OK, you might say 'hold on True Blood isn't in their class' but didn't we all think it might be after the first season? Here was an intelligent show, that treated vampires in an adult manner. Come on, admit it, we all had high hopes. Then came season two and that whole Caligula lite thing with that odd creature, did it turn into a pig? I can't remember. So True Blood slipped out of the Premier League and season three saw a further relegation, what with werewolves that made New Moon look like The Howling.

So now here we are in season four and the slump seems to be continuing unabated. We started in that kind of fairy land where Sookie met her fairy godmother, I kid you not. But wait, it's a trap and it all suddenly becomes Labyrinth lite, with goblins everywhere. But, thankfully, Sookie escapes to find she has been gone over a year... but she thought she was only away a few minutes! The woman is a fairy and she still can't grasp stuff like that? I'd suggest fairy school, but that will probably crop up around episode ten anyway.

So, in her absence, everyone has moved. I won't bore you with what they are up to, I'll leave that to the show itself but we get witches this season. Suffice to say, True Blood still thinks it is an intelligent show, despite all evidence to the contrary, and is nowhere near as good as it thinks it is.

Its a shame, if that first season just stood on its own, much like say Firefly, we would all be marvel at it and wonder where they could have took it. My guess is none of us would have said Sookie would meet her fairy godmother.

True Blood Returns...

True Blood should be back on FX in the next couple of weeks. I say True Blood but we all know that really means Soft Fantasy Porn. I wish I cared but quite frankly I’m just not interested in watching a fairy have sex with a vampire.

The last taboo....

I’ve heard a rumour that the new series of Dexter contains incest between Deb and Dexter. Well I say ‘new’ I mean new to the UK as it’s already aired in America!

Anyway I digress.. I was shocked when I heard about the incest storyline. It seemed a little bizarre to me but it turns out its true, Deb and Dexter get it on. I found this out a couple of days after watching the penultimate episode of Boardwalk Empire, you know the one when Jimmy and his mother have sex… and it got me thinking, is incest the only thing that shocks us on TV these days?

People being murdered (Dexter) having affairs (every show) the world ending (The Walking Dead) sex with gimps (American Horror Story) none of this bothers us anymore. But if my reaction of ‘that scene’ in Boardwalk is anything is to go by, it really is the last taboo.

‘That scene’ you know the one, with Jimmy and his Mother (Gretchen Mol) well it repulsed me. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and feeling ‘eugh’ for a good few hours afterwards. I haven’t felt that way about a TV show for years (if ever) and it was horrible. I’ve definitely never felt like that when watching Dexter cut someone up, or watching Connie Britton having sex with a demon but this got me and maybe that’s why producers are starting to play the incest card more.

The team behind Dexter are claiming that the storyline was always going to happen but I’m not so sure. I have never had the impression that Deb loved Dexter in more of a brotherly way. We all know that Deb is a bit of a messed up character but she never that messed up and if I’m right the storyline doesn’t come up in the books. I’ll admit I’m interested to see how it pans out but I’m not expecting to be happy about it. Especially if it’s clear that the storyline has been thrown in for shock purposes.

So if I were you I’d prepare for more incest on your TV. Once producers figure out it repulses us it will be everywhere, well until we are completely desensitized to it and it no longer bothers us.

True Blood - God loves fangs.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how I wasn’t looking forward to watching the new series of True Blood on FX. Well I can’t tell you how pleased I am to report that this season is the best yet!

It is so much darker and grimier then the past two series. There is more violence and blood, sinister under tones and less romance and sex. The lack of sex is welcome for me because it was all getting a bit too much. I know that Vampires are meant to be sexual beings but there is only so much of it you want to see. We managed to get through six episodes in a row and there wasn’t a fang banger in sight, which makes a change as we spent half of season 2 watching the ridiculous ‘Maynard’ put the whole of Bon Temps under some sort of sex spell.

For me the new characters are making this season so good. So far none of them have disappointed like the Maynard and Eggs did in season 2. The psychotic Franklin was funnier in one episode then the whole of Benidorm has been for two seasons and Russell is the best villain we’ve had so far in True Blood. The werewolves have also been a welcome addition, portrayed as drug-addled hill billies as opposed to jean wearing do gooders and a bigger use of the Queen of Louisiana has gone down a treat.

A lot of the season has been centered more on Eric then it has Bill, which is a nice change, and thankfully we have had a reprieve from the Bill and Sookie love story. When the show started it seemed like they would be the core of the show, but True Blood seems to have completely moved on from that now. Whether they are a couple almost seems irrelevant. I'm also enjoying the big mystery as to what Sookie’s power is. My money is on some sort of fairy or pixie, but considering season 3 has been nothing short of mean, I’m probably way off base.

My only problem is the way some of the characters have been completely wasted. Lafayette for example has had another non-existent season, and Jessica who was a breath of fresh air in season 2 has been quiet for the last 8 episodes.

There are only 4 episodes left and I can’t wait for them, it almost makes me regret not wanting to watch the show in the first place!

True Blood Season 3

I intend to watch around three episodes of True Blood tonight but from what I’ve seen of the first two episodes, I may as well just sit down and watch some vampire based porn, there wouldn’t be much difference. At the moment it seems to be all sex and blood with a werewolf thrown in for good measure. Like Twilight gone wild.

I enjoy the show and I like the characters, I just think the story needs to start developing if I’m going to enjoy this season. My friends, who have already seen season 3, say that it’s much better then series 2 so I do have high hopes for the next few episodes. To be honest I can’t even remember what happened in the past two episodes except that Eric was naked for a lot of it (not necessarily a bad thing) and Tara tried to kill herself but was saved by Lafayette (a massive shame in my opinion)

It’s not like I’m a prude and object to sex on TV. It’s just when you’re watching on a Friday night with a pizza hut and a mild hangover it can all be a bit too much. Maybe that’s my own fault for choosing to watch it then...

Anyway I’ll let you know how I get on.
