The last taboo....

I’ve heard a rumour that the new series of Dexter contains incest between Deb and Dexter. Well I say ‘new’ I mean new to the UK as it’s already aired in America!

Anyway I digress.. I was shocked when I heard about the incest storyline. It seemed a little bizarre to me but it turns out its true, Deb and Dexter get it on. I found this out a couple of days after watching the penultimate episode of Boardwalk Empire, you know the one when Jimmy and his mother have sex… and it got me thinking, is incest the only thing that shocks us on TV these days?

People being murdered (Dexter) having affairs (every show) the world ending (The Walking Dead) sex with gimps (American Horror Story) none of this bothers us anymore. But if my reaction of ‘that scene’ in Boardwalk is anything is to go by, it really is the last taboo.

‘That scene’ you know the one, with Jimmy and his Mother (Gretchen Mol) well it repulsed me. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and feeling ‘eugh’ for a good few hours afterwards. I haven’t felt that way about a TV show for years (if ever) and it was horrible. I’ve definitely never felt like that when watching Dexter cut someone up, or watching Connie Britton having sex with a demon but this got me and maybe that’s why producers are starting to play the incest card more.

The team behind Dexter are claiming that the storyline was always going to happen but I’m not so sure. I have never had the impression that Deb loved Dexter in more of a brotherly way. We all know that Deb is a bit of a messed up character but she never that messed up and if I’m right the storyline doesn’t come up in the books. I’ll admit I’m interested to see how it pans out but I’m not expecting to be happy about it. Especially if it’s clear that the storyline has been thrown in for shock purposes.

So if I were you I’d prepare for more incest on your TV. Once producers figure out it repulses us it will be everywhere, well until we are completely desensitized to it and it no longer bothers us.

Dexter - Always Getting Better.

After watching season 1 of Dexter, I never thought season 2 would be as good. It was. After the death of Doakes in season 2, I failed to see how season 3 could compare. It did. After the guest appearance of Jimmy Smitz as Miguel Prado, I didn’t think season 4 would be able to produce a character as gripping and thrilling with just as good a storyline. But then came along The Trinity Killer and the death of Rita and it was perhaps the best season of TV there has ever been (and that includes season 3 of The Wire) It was TV at it’s very best. So you could understand why I was sceptical of season 5? You can understand why I thought that in no way could it compare to season 4? But it did. Of course it wasn’t as good; it’ll be a long time before we see anything as good as season 4 of Dexter, but it was still brilliant.

Which leads me to the question, season 4 aside, what is the best season of Dexter? Because no matter how much I try, I can’t figure out? Throughout the last 6 years there’s never once been a dip in form, if anything it’s got better. It’s evolved into one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and each season is as good as the last.

I’m ashamed to admit it now, but after the amazingness of The Trinity Killer I was really sceptical when I found out that Julia Stiles was going to be guest starring in season 5. I’d only ever seen her in ‘Save the Last Dance’ and ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ so I wasn’t sure she’d be able to pull off a show like Dexter. How wrong was I? I clearly didn’t realise how good an actress she is. Clearly the show runners at Dexter did because she was great. She deserves her own show after her performance as Lumen. I wasn’t concerned when it came to Johnny Lee Miller, we’ve always known what a fantastic actor he is and once again he didn’t disappoint. The problem with these guest appearances; they’re so good you become so disappointed when they can only stay for one season.

Next season sees a change in show runner for the first time in Dexter’s history. So what that means for the show, I’m not sure. What we do know is that season 6 will jump ahead a year, so Dexter will be over the death of Rita and the rejection of Lumen. We’re also being told that Dexter will be returning to its roots which surely has to mean more killings. I’ve no doubt it will be just as good as season 5, if not better.

In case you were wondering, which of course you were, I put my favourite seasons in order. It goes 4, 5,1,3,2 I’ve put a poll to the side so you can vote on your favourite seasons as well.

Dexter - Shame on you FX

So once again I find myself avoiding spoilers on Dexter. But I’m not trying to stop myself from reading spoilers from season 5, oh no, I'm trying to avoid spoilers on season 6! Season 6! That’s right, the UK are only three episodes into season 5 but the states are preparing themselves for season 6.

I know I've banged on about this sort of thing before but it frustrates me that most Dexter fans have seen the episodes I’m waiting for on a Friday evening. They know all the things I want to know! They know if Lumen succumbs to the darkness, they know if Dexter is revealed as Kyle Butler, they know if Quinn finds out about our favorite serial killer and they know if he faces the same fate as Doakes did in season 2.

I have to say I don’t think Quinn will end up on Dexter’s table (and if he does I'll be devastated!) This is one of the most sophisticated shows on TV and I can’t see them repeating a storyline from season 2.

Either way I’m excited to find out. We are now 5 seasons into dexter and the quality has never dipped. If anything it has got better as the seasons have gone on, although saying that I can’t see this season being better then last years with John Lithgow.

I just wish I could have been watching Dexter six months ago instead of being a year behind. Shame on you FX, shame on you.
