The Vampire Diaries - Blood Drenched Dawson's Creek

I'm trying to remember what The Vampire Diaries used to be like, before it entered its meandering phase. Was it exciting, thrilling, and fresh? I think it probably was. But these days it has become, and I suppose with Kevin Williamson on board, it was always going to be, a blood drenched Dawson's Creek. Take away the gore and I'll bet you could see  a lot of similarities. But we all love Mystic Falls don't we, where the majority of characters are not only supernatural they are also supernaturally attractive. You get the feeling anyone with average looks would get run out of town on a rail and drained of blood.

This season has got off to a slow, easy going start. Elena is now a vampire, Jeremy is now  a vampire hunter as if that family was not conflicted enough. So Stefan and Klaus are out for a cure, so Elena can stop being an insufferable vampire and return to being an insufferable human again. And Damon is just Damon, he has all the best lines and all the best eyebrow arches. He could quite easily spin off into a series of his own leaving the witches, hybrids, vampires, and whatever else to their own devices.

But despite my moans The Vampire Diaries is still watchable and has never resorted to True Blood's pretentious, look at us we are doing high art here, delusions. It is just getting quite hard to see where it is  going, but I'm sure we will be all sitting in front of it in a few years time and thinking how great it was when Elena was a vampire.
