Da Vinci - Papal Shenanigans.

Who knew Leonardo Da Vinci looked like George Michael, circa the Faith video, and acted like a crazed QVC presenter? No, me neither, but that is how he comes across in the opening episode of Fox's new show Da Vinci's Demons.

Set in Florence Da Vinci's Demons sails quite close to The Borgias and as we all know one Borgias is one too many, so two heaven forbid. But this show also has elements of ancient powers, secret societies, and other tosh to keep it moving. Yep I'm sure we are in for a lot of Papal shenanigans as the Vatican are secretly plotting against Leonardo's employers the Medici's. Thinking about it, it is close to The Borgias territory, perhaps we will get a cross over as Jeremy Irons Frankie Howerd Borgia wanders into Florence looking for Leonardo to knock out a quick portrait.  The tosh and codswallop levels are kept topped up as the secretive, yawn, Book of Leaves keeps getting mentioned and our hyper active hero meets  a mysterious Turk.

Blade and Batman scribe David S Goyer is the creator, so  we are in good hands and Da Vinci's Demons moved along quite nicely and it looks great. The acting is OK, although Tom Riley's Leonardo could do with inventing himself some Ritalin and we have Laura Haddock doing a very good Angelina Jolie impression. There was a neat little trick at the beginning, I won't give away, which in retrospect was the cleverest moment of this opening episode. But, tosh and codswallop aside there was enough in Da Vinci's Demons to want to see what happens next.
