The Emmys 2013

The Emmy winners were announced last night and how does the British media handle it? Like it is the showbiz extension of Team GB.

It's all about how badly the Brits performed. The way the news shows went on about Downton Abbey winning  nothing, you almost expected Roy Hodgson to come on and explain what went wrong. " Well Lady Mary is carrying a slight knock and Mr. Carson is still a few games away from full fitness."

Why this jingoistic, flag waving approach, is it that no real British involvement means no real story? I've never seen an episode of Downton Abbey, but I think Breaking Bad is one of the greatest television shows ever made. So why do I feel like I'm burning the Union Jack just because I'm glad it won and Downton didn't. It's much the same with the Oscars, telly idiots looking all doleful because some British actor lost out in a film nobody saw. Why do we have to cheer the Brits if we hated the film or TV show; where did this all come from? It certainly won't stop, if anything, it's getting worse.

If Downton Abbey does better next year perhaps they will get an open top bus parade through London, fingers crossed ah.
