Wentworth Throwback.

I have fond memories of wandering in from the pub and watching Prisoner Cell Block H, mainly due to the fact it was the only thing on late at night  back then. I would revel in the dour story-lines and wobbly sets that made Crossroads look like Cleopatra.

Well now its back, on Channel 5, all spruced up and re-imagined as Wentworth Prison. But there is nothing retro about this refit, it is contemporary and as gritty as a sandpaper enema. It centres around Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack) yeah that Bea, Queen Bea of old and there are a few names from the previous Prisoner knocking about. But Bea is a newbie, banged up for trying to kill her abusive husband, and no doubt as the seasons progress, we will see her rise to the title of Queen. There was even a neat, little twist where we heard the famous old theme tune sung in solitary.

But don't come expecting Wentworth Prison to be another camp classic, this is a rough, tough show, well written and well acted. And it is a nice, gritty counter point to the highly entertaining shenanigans of Orange Is The New Black.

So I'd certainly recommend doing a stretch in Wentworth Prison for the rest of the season.
