Two and a Half Men - Change of Opinion

In my last ‘Men’ post I stated categorically, that under no circumstances what so ever, would I be watching Two and a Half Men once Charlie Sheen was killed off and replaced with Ashton Kutcher. I stated that I knew what I was getting myself into when I started watching the show, so I was prepared for it to end in season 8. I had two reasons for thinking like this; the first was that I loathe Ashton Kutcher in anything he's been in, which is pretty much That 70’s show and Punked. I found him loud, shouty, stupid and moronic. So it’s fair to say I’m not his biggest fan. The 2nd point was that I couldn’t see how Men could continue with Charlie Sheen/Harper. I was convinced that the show revolved around him, that he was the funniest one there and that it would fall apart without him in it.

I now realise that my points, the latter more so then the former, were a bit naive.

I’ll explain the latter first. Charlie Harper is not the be all and end all of Two and a Half Men. Yes he's hilarious and he's the main character but I'd be a lot more worried if Jon Cryer had gone on the binge of the century and got himself fired. I don’t think the show could have work without Alan. My point is that all the ‘Men’ cast are funny and talented and I don’t want to stop watching just because Charlie isn’t in it anymore. I get my biggest laughs from Evelyn and Berta as opposed to Charlie (once again that’s not to say he isn’t funny) and Alan is just as funny as Charlie if not more so, so it seems stupid to not tune in just because one character isn't in it anymore. Men is bigger then one character.

With regards to my hatred for Ashton Kutcher, well even that has changed a little bit lately. I recently watched the film ‘No Strings Attached’ (on a plane I may add, not out of choice) and to Kutchers credit he played the part really well, He wasn’t loud or shouty or stupid or moronic like he used to be. In fact, throughout the film I actually warmed to him quite a lot. It got me thinking maybe I judged him too soon. After all it has been nearly 10 years since That 70’s show and Punked finished, meaning he's 10 years older and probably a bit different now. So, if (and that’s a big if) he plays his Men character the way he played the part in No Strings Attached, then I may just may be able to get through the season without gouging my eyes out.

Curiosity will have me (and probably everyone else) tuning in for the first episode of season 9 but it'll take a lot more to keep me tuned in for the other 23 episodes. But like I said earlier, if the writers and rest of the cast can keep up the standards to which we're used to, then I reckon I may be able to watch season 9. I’m not saying I’m going to love it like I have seasons 1-6 but I may be able to stomach it and who knows I may even enjoy it.
