Villains We Love - Sons of Anarchy

I once read a review of On Golden Pond where it said what the film really needed was a motorcycle gang. The weird thing, these days, is that the Sons of Anarchy would probably protect the elderly Thayer's and not intimidate them. Shady, anti hero types are quite popular at the moment. Dexter is a serial killer but we love him, Walt and Jessie, in Breaking Bad, cook meth and we root for them, and the Sons of Anarchy are violent gun runners, but they're the good guys.

So how are the good guys of SAMCRO (and it took me many an episode to figure out what that stood for) faring in season 3? Up and down really. The whole Jax's baby kidnapped by Irish gunrunners saga is rolling on, And that looks much sillier written down than it does on screen. The infant has ended up in Belfast, which I think is a bit of a mistake. So what is going to happen? Will Jax have to go over there to sort it all out, like when they sent Colombo to London or Higgins to Leeds? Sons of Anarchy has worked best within the confines of Charming, After all that's their territory, what they're supposed to protect. If it becomes some sort of international jaunt then, to my mind, it loses its edge. Having said that, the best storyline so far has been, on the run Gemma holing up in her father's house. Drafting in the excellent Hal Holbrook to play Alzheimer's sufferer Nathanial was a master stroke. It's moving one moment, humorous the next and is bringing out the best in Katey Sagal as Gemma. It's getting hard to believe she was once Peggy Bundy. And, going off on a tangent, why isn't Married With Children being given a from the start re run by anyone?

Back to SAMCRO, the internal tensions seem to have abated, for the moment. The whole Jax as a biker Hamlet thing (father dies uncle marries mother type scenario) they had going on seems to have faded, but you feel it will be returning. So I think the real problem with Sons of Anarchy at the moment, is that they had such strong story lines in season 2 they seem to be overwhelming and not flowing into season 3. But I'm positive it will all come around. I'm just hoping we don't see Jax bump into Jessica Fletcher on the streets of Belfast.
