Let's hope the pilot of Alibi's (yes Alibi, hands up all those who have watched anything on Alibi) new show The Glades doesn't start a trend.
I always thought a pilot was there to set the scene, introduce the basic scenario, and get things ready for the rest of the season, also to jettison all the characters that didn't quite work. But The Glades got all that out of the way in the opening titles. With a kind of 'Hey I'm cocksure Detective Jim Longworth, I used to be a hotshot in Chicago, now I'm taking it easy in Florida' That was it, and we were plunged into an ordinary episode and we had to scratch around for info as Jim dispensed it. In truth the plot, of the opener, was quite good we had alligators, decapitations, and
a neat twist, at the end, I didn't see coming.
Detective Jim Longworth is played convincingly by Australian Matt Passmore, as flash, self confident, and insufferable as they come. But you just know the quiet life he hoped for isn't going to materialise, it would be a boring show if it did. Being set in Florida, where Horatio Caine and Dexter Morgan ply their trades you kind of hope The Glades would have some sort of spark to compete, perhaps throw in a little Carl Hiaasen type madness, but no it all seems very easy going and workman like.
With the show being on Alibi, I naturally assumed it was one of those one season wonders, but to my shock, it is now coming up to its fourth season in America. So The Glades must be doing something right, that or people just like looking at the Florida Everglades.
