Like most sane people I had wandered away from Smallville long before the Green Arrow character made his entrance, so I have no idea if it has any relevance to Arrow.
As a kid I used to love Green Arrow, all the trick arrows and Speedy his teenage sidekick. Then there was a gap and I came back when he was reinvented by Mike Grell as more vigilante than superhero in The longbow Hunters and the subsequent comic run; it is MikeGrell's Green Arrow that we have in Sky 1's Arrow.
After being lost on an island for five years, no not that island. But let's face it wouldn't you have like to have seen an expert marksman let loose amongst Dr. Jack, Charlie and the Others. Where was I? Oh yeah after five years on an island billionaire Oliver Queen isrescued and returns to a ravaged, broken Star City. So he does what most people would do, dons a hood, takes up his bow and arrow and starts taking down the greedy rich. Oliver's skills were obviously forged on the island, so no doubt we will get a season of flashbacks. There are a lot of peripheral characters that didn't really make much of a mark in the first episode, including Saturday night dancer Colin Salmon as the snidey head of the corporation, where would we be without that staple super hero character?
There is an ex girlfriend who is kind of the Lois Lane, her father is the avenging cop out to nab Green Arrow, or is it going to be just Arrow? I was a little scared when Oliver called his sister Speedy, does that mean she will be his sidekick, or was it referring to her burgeoningdrug habit?
The show is as slick as snot on cling film and moves at a decent pace, but there is nothing new about Arrow. I'm sure none of it shocked or thrilled us. The test will come later as to how well the story develops and what happened to Oliver on that island. If John Lock makes it go through time I'm turning off.
