Las Vegas: More Lewis than Sopranos.

With Nick Pileggi as co creator and writer if you thought Sky Atlantic's Vegas was going to be as gritty as Goodfellas or as cool as Casino then you were in for a bit of a disappointment. Sadly, the show is pretty bog standard, run of the mill detective stuff more Lewis in Las Vegas than Sopranos on the Strip.

Set in, guess where, in 1960 Vegas  tells the true, well true for television, story of Sheriff  and rancher Ralph Lamb, who brought his style of wild west  justice to the mobsters and biker gangs of Las Vegas. Dennis Quaid, giving us his best Harrison Ford impression, plays Lamb, while his mobster nemesis and manager of the Savoy Hotel, Vincent Savino, is played by the formidable Michael Chiklis. How their fractious relationship develops will go a long way to how successful the series will become.

The pilot concerned a murdered young woman and her connection to the casino, well my heart sank because the last time that scenario popped up we were treated to two tedious seasons of the American version of The Killing. But thankfully Ralph Lamb solved in an hour what Sarah Linden took about twenty five to achieve.

Also in the cast is Jason Omara as Ralph's brother and Deputy Jack Lamb, but after the American Life On Mars and the dull Terra Nova he is becoming a bit of a one season wonder, so I suppose all concerned with Vegas are hoping Mr. Omara doesn't complete his hat trick.
