Bored of Boardwalk Empire

Will we ever discover what is wrong with Boardwalk Empire? Let's face it with its subject matter and talent involved it should be right up there as everyone's favourite show. But it just isn't.

Now three episodes into season four Boardwalk Empire has become hopelessly fragmented buzzing from Atlantic City to New York, Chicago, and now Florida. So it is hard to keep tabs on all the goings on. The show doesn't seem to be able to juggle lots of characters doing lots of things like The Sopranos and The Wire did. Another problem with Boardwalk Empire is that almost everyone is more interesting than Nucky (Steve Buscemi), so we have the hero of the show slowing it down. While he is on screen we are itching to see more of Capone, Luciano, LanskyRothstienand the tortured, disfigured Richard (Jack Huston). On the plus side we have the excellent Jeffrey Wright as Harlem gangster Dr.Narcisse, he is obviously this season's Gyp Rosetti, in to liven the whole affair up and he is certainly doing that. Another positive for the show, so far, is that Kelly McDonald's simpering Margaret hasn't shown up yet, but she will, and the whole thing will grind to a halt, as it always does, when her character gets a story line.

So we keep watching Boardwalk Empire just because we do; knowing it will never be great just chug along underachieving at its own pace.
