Have you ever wondered what would happen if The Sons of Anarchy jumped into The Hot Tub Time Machine? Well now we know in the shape of Vikings. Ragnar ( Travis Frimmel ), who looks a lot like Jax, is the leader of a marauding band of, yes you guessed it ,Travel Reps,opps no, Vikings. Ragnar believes there are untold riches in a far off land called England. Well we all know he's wrong there. But his enthusiasm is not exactly shared by Earl Haraldson played by Gabriel Byrne, the only recognisable name in the cast. Unless you are related to one of the others that is. So there you have the main friction of the show. Ragnar is ably assisted on his quests by his snidey, conniving brother Rollo ( Clive Standen ) and his shield maiden wife, come supermodel Lagertha ( Katheryn Winnick ).
The trouble is Vikings seems to fall between two long ships, it would love to be up there with the intrigues of Game of Thrones or down there with the gore of Spartacus. But it is not as good as either of those shows. Perhaps as the seasons go by it will mature and find it's own way. It is created by Michael Hirst, who gave us The Tudors, so let's hope by season four Ragnar is not walking with a cane and doing a terrible Richard Burton impression.
