ITV 2 must be looking over their shoulders with great concern as new channel TLC have started to move into their territory. Not only do they have shows like Extreme Couponing (how on Earth did ITV miss that one?) but now TLC have brought to our shores the ultimate ITV 2 show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
Set in rural Georgia Here Comes Honey Boo Boo follows the exploits of the Thompson family and the titular six year old Alana 'Honey Boo Boo' as she takes part in those odd, unnerving kid pageant things. Honey is far from shy and retiring, but in the first episode she lost out twice and took her defeat like any self respecting reality show star with distraught tears. The driving force behind Honey's stumbling pageant career is Mama June, a very large flatulentwoman, who thinks you have to fart fifteen times a day to be healthy, from what we have seen so far, Mama June is in extremely good health. The rest of the Thompson family seem to struggle, quite literally, to get out of the shadow of Honey and Mama June. Sisters Pumpkin, Chubbs and Chickadee vie for position in the show, but it is poor old dad 'Sugar Bear' who you have to feel sorry for, half the time he just stands there bemused as his family run riot around him. But you would struggle to call the Thompson's dysfunctional, they seem to get on, more or less, and they have a strong family bond.
I suppose the idea of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is that we are supposed to sit back and snigger, much like Geordie Shore, and say 'thank Heaven I'm not like that', but these things have a tendency to back fire and what is supposed to be a joke turns out to beaspirational. One thing is for sure you just know ITV 2 is preparing a British Honey Boo Boo and they won't be short of candidates.
