The Bridge II

While the BBC confuses quality with popularity in the shape of Doctor Who and Sherlock, the real quality can be found tucked away on BBC 4 with the return of The Bridge. And a welcome return it is. Things start off with a bang, quite literally, as a seemingly abandoned cargo ship goes off course and smacks straight onto the massive Oresund Bridge, that links Sweden and Denmark

Well it is not long before Saga Noren (the brilliant Sofia Helin) and Martin Rohde (the equally brilliant Kim Bodnia) are reunited for another cross boarder case. But things have changed with Martin, he is still traumatised by the death of his son in the first season. Not that Saga can see, or understand why, as excellently shown when the pair drive across the Oresund Bridge. The two actors seem to be revelling in their roles and the chemistry is there to see. But as we know from the Brit remake The Tunnel this is not an easy trick to pull off. Saga's fantastic, almost other worldliness, approach to life has to bebalanced and off set by Martin. As with the first season, there are a couple of seemingly unrelated side plots that will, no doubt, tie themselves into the main investigation.

OK, the cultural differences are still lost on us, Sweden looks a lot like Denmark, and vice versa, but that is a very minor quibble. The return of the Bridge is going to be a treat all over again and, thankfully, they have retained the frankly daffy theme tune.
