About A Boy : A Hugh Grant Free Zone

The new comedy About A Boy could start a pleasing new trend, it did the 97 minute film in under half an hour and it was faster, funnier and had no Hugh Grant. Everybody wins. Especially those of us who think Hugh Grant is a one trick pony and the trick isn't that great. Think of all the other Hugh Grant films that could be converted to half an hour and be improved, in fact, think of all the bum numbing films in general that could be given the same treatment. The mind boggles.
Anyway, let's get to the new About A Boy, transferred to a very scenic San Fransisco the show centres around Will Freeman , played by David Walton who looks a lot like a young C. Thomas Howell . Will wrote a Christmas song that has given him the money and freedom to live the bachelor life to the max. That is until he gets involved with his new annoying neighbour Fiona ( the ever reliable Mini Driver ) and her son Marcus ( the very good Benjamin Stockham ). Sounds pretty straight forward, but the pilot episode was propelled forward by some first rate performances and a sharp, funny script by the show's creator Jason Katims. Where About A Boy will go once it shakes off the book and film remains to be seen. But on this evidence it will be worth following. Now Jason Katims needs to get his hands on Mickey Blue Eyes.
