Game of Thrones : Return of the King

When Sky Atlantic launched, what about three years ago  (how time flies ) Boardwalk Empire was the show they were pushing. No doubt they saw it as their shining flagship, not the knackered old tugboat it turned out to be. Game of Thrones barely got a mention in its line up of stars. But look how things have changed. Game of Thrones seems to be the reason Sky Atlantic exists. But let's face it, the show deserves every ounce of praise it gets. Now in its fourth season, what could be a sprawling mess ( back to Boardwalk Empire again ) is a tight, controlled television masterpiece. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have taken George R.R. Martin's massive house brick sized novels and made them better. Anyone who has struggled through the tedium of A Feast For Crows will surely agree. If you know anyone who has trouble sleeping just give them that book, it will do the trick.  But here comes a problem. The source novels are getting slower and more stretched.Plus, they are running out. The aforementioned A Feast For Crows barely has enough incident and action to fill one hour of television, let alone a season. So will Benioff and Weiss go off on their own? They should, because every change Game of Thrones has made over the seasons have all been improvements over the books. Let's go off on a tangent and look at the case of Hannibal. After Silence of the Lambs, I'm sure all concerned could have come up with a great sequel that would have been true to the characters of the film. Instead they waited for Thomas Harris to come up with Hannibal. A gruesome, dull novel that could never transfer well to the screen. My convoluted point is, why hang around, Benioff and Weiss should forge ahead. Game of Thrones needs a season a year. It can't take a hiatus otherwise Bran will be carrying Hodor around, how quickly the young cast are growing up. Whatever happens let's enjoy this great classic series while we can. As soon as it finishes the clone shows will pour in and dilute our joy.
