The 100 : Spring Break!!!

The Earth is devastated by one of those television type apocalypses, uninhabitable for ninety seven years, the remainder of the population are stuck on a low rent failing space station called The Ark, obviously designed by bunch of futuristic Babylon 5 enthusiasts. The Draconian government on The Ark have the brain wave of getting rid of their hundred top ranking juvenile delinquents by launching them to Earth to see if it is still habitable or not. And that's basically it with the new si-fi blender show The 100.
So on landing our youthful heroes and villains quickly establish themselves. Plucky leader Clarke ( Eliza Taylor ) seems to be the only one with any semblance brains, so she gets together a little band to hunt for supplies. While the rest, under the dodgy leadership of the dodgy Bellamy ( Bobby Morley ), act like it is a cross between Lord of the Flies and Spring Break. All the while they are being monitored back on The Ark by veteran television stalwarts Isiah Washington, Henry Ian Cusick, and Paige Turco.
The 100 ( apparently pronounced the hundred not the one hundred; don't say you don't learn anything. ) brings to mind an awful lot of things from that Will Smith film no one went to see, the afore-mentioned Lord of the Flies, there's even a hint of Hunger Games thrown in there. But the pilot worked quite well, there is a lot of scope for suspense on a 'supposedly' uninhabited Earth. The young actors, as you would expect, look more like outcasts from a modelling agency than criminals.  Plus, as we know, no American series these days is complete without someone from Home and Away or Neighbours and with The 100 we are doubly blessed Eliza Taylor, who plays  Clarke, was in Neighbours and Bobby Morley, as dodgy Bellamy, did a stint in both of the Aussie Soaps. The one thing that casts a shadow over The 100 is its potential to slip into Lost. All the elements are there, for an enjoyable looking show to slide into Lostian mega tosh. In the end we all hated Lost let's hope the makers of The100 realise that fact.
