Detectorists : Hard To Find

You probably need some sort of detector to find  the new comedy Detectorists, which is neatly hidden away on BBC Four ( nuff said ). Written, directed and starring McKenzie Crook, so we only have one place to look if it all goes wrong, the show centres around friends Andy ( McKenzie Crook ) and Lance ( Toby Jones ) and their ceaseless enthusiasm for metal detecting. OK, the pair are a little cliched, Andy is a bit of a man child, unable to fully commit to girlfriend Becky ( Rachael Stirling ) and Lance is endlessly, and somewhat creepily, obsessed with his ex wife Maggie ( Lucy Benjamin ). But writer, director Crook is ably served by his cast, which is first rate. The acting raises the whole show up a few notches. While Detectorists is a gentle, easy going comedy it has the odd dark edge that sets it apart, making it funny and never less than enjoyable. Back in the old days this would've been a BBC Two show and would've got a lot more attention than it does buried beneath the Dad Rock and Gallery Wandering documentaries of that populate BBC Four. It deserves better.
